ENRICH is the world's first and only robotics trial that gives you pure and unspoiled real world scenarios for testing. In Summer 2025 we will provide you with a full blown Hazardous Materials Incident Response Operation – including finding real radiation sources, mapping challenging environments and/or manipulating radioactive material. ENRICH - A new Robotics Competition

Incidents such as Fukushima, Majak or Chernobyl as well as the decommissioning and dismantling of old nuclear facilities (e.g. Sellafield, Asse or Murmansk) have taught us that the use of robotics technology has clear advantages. There are many measurement and sampling tasks too risky for humans to carry out. For these radiological and nuclear (RN) scenarios specialized robot systems have to be developed. However, although there is a strong need for such solutions, for the near future no market-ready systems can be identified. Together with several partners , the European Robotics group decided to transfer the already well-established hackathon idea from the field of software development into the robotics world – and would like to announce:

This Robotics Hackathon is intended to bring together roboticists on the one hand and RN professionals & specialists on the other hand. To give a better insight into possible robotic applications for radiological and nuclear tasks the event will be accompanied by a R&D workshop. As common for software hackathons ENRICH will contain a contest element as well, in which a panel of judges selects the winning teams. However, our main goal is to foster the development of robotic solutions for the RN domain. So, if you are interested in an exciting event in a unique environment – you are cordially invited to attend!


Please keep in mind that ENRICH is

  • not organised as a competition but as a trial,
  • a strictly non-profit activity and
  • strictly R&D oriented.
Therefore it offers the unique opportunity for companies to demonstrate equipment in a non-competitive environment and for users to see the systems perform in current real-world scenarios.

  • You can only participate if you actually carry out real radiation measurements.
  • There will be a combined UAV & UGV scenario. We strongly encourage all participants to use UAV/UGV cooperation.

The Environment

The boiling water reactor of the Zwentendorf Nuclear Power Plant (NPP Zwentendorf) is the world’s only nuclear power plant which has been completed but never put into operation. In Zwentendorf areas are easily accessible which in other NPPs can only be visited under severe difficulties. In an active nuclear power plant extensive safety precautions are needed for human personnel due to the high level of radioactivity. Instead, in the NPP Zwentendorf engineers have transformed the plant and turbine halls into a training centre. Repair and dismantling measures but also critical incidents and disaster scenarios can be trained under realistic conditions.

The Challenges

Expect the typical interior of a power plant with elements like: low or no light, closed doors, dead ends, sharp turns, blockings, steep stairs and narrow passages; see example images.

Expect major difficulties for any kind of communication approach due to massive concrete walls and metal interiors.

Due to the active radiation sources inside the scenario nobody is allowed to accompany the robot(s). However, the scene will be equipped with cameras, allowing some basic supervision from outside. Additionally, Austrian radiation protection officials will ensure that there is no danger caused by the RN radiation, neither for team members nor for the robot systems!

A single run will last about 30 minutes plus some additional time to put the system into an operational state. So no time for debugging and online coding during the run; instead simply sign in for the next free time slot.

The Tasks

Naturally, a nuclear power plant contains areas which cannot be safely entered by human personnel. On the one hand due to inherent radiation in some areas, on the other hand due to technical problems or accidents. The later case might lead to an unpredictable and uncontrolled radioactive contamination. In any of these cases a robotic system offering the ability to do remote exploration and manipulation would be very helpful.


ENRICH 2025 offers three different categories:

Mapping – There are two (separate) exploration tasks. First, radiation should be detected, measured and marked inside a digital map. Second, a digital 3D map of the area of interest has to be built.
Manipulation – The manipulation task is divided into two sub-tasks. First, identify a specific pipe containing radioactive coolant. Second, close the corresponding valve.
Search & Rescue (SAR) – In the search and rescue task we will provide dummies spread throughout the building. These have to be found, the positions should be marked in the map, and - if possible - the dummies should be moved to a safe area.


One or more robots and any combination of UGVs and UAVs may be used; UAV/UGV cooperation is strongly encouraged. Teams can choose to work on any combination of the tasks. However, radiation detection and maesurement is mandatory. A robot without a radiation sensor will not be allowed to start!

The Rules

According to the overall Hackathon idea, first and foremost ENRICH is not searching for the ultimate winning team. Instead, we would mainly like to offer the possibility to test your system in a realistic setting and under challenging conditions. Thus, we tried to reduce the official regulations to a minimal set of rules:

  • Each team gets its own working area for preparation (table, benches, electrical power, wireless internet) for the whole duration of the event
  • There is one scenario with different tasks (exploration, manipulation, search & rescue); teams may freely choose to work on any combination of these, but radiation measurement is mandatory; the UAVs and UGVs start from the same point, UAV/UGV cooperation is strongly encouraged
  • There will be no pre-assigned time schedule; teams simply sign in for free time slots
  • The use of RN sensors is mandatory! Participants shall use their own equipment. Instructions how to build your own radiation detector for the scenario can be found using "PIN Diode Geiger Counter" as input for your favourite search engine, see example
  • Participants are welcome to use a trained dog instead of the UGV; the scenario will be adapted accordingly to guarantee that it is safe for dogs
  • All robots must be prepared to mount one of our GoPro™ cameras for documentation purposes
  • During the event the organisers collect photo and video material and claim the right for publication, see below
  • The organisers will document each team's human-robot-interface and grab and display the output of the Operator Control Unit(s)
  • The 3D result maps should preferably be textured/colourised/RGB-D point clouds readable and displayable by the CloudCompare software
  • All participants have to pass any collected sensor data (in ROS bag format) to the organisers for online publication since this an open-sciences & open-research event

Judges

A team of honorary judges forms the jury for ENRICH. This Judge Team accompanies the whole event, mediates in the case of differences and misunderstandings, and assesses the systems' performance. The Judge Team consists of experienced RN professionals as well as reputable members of the robotics community. Members of the ENRICH Judge Team are:

Results

ENRICH is not meant to be a competition in the first place. There is no ranking system, no numbers collected, no result lists and no high-score. However, the Judge Team had a close look at all presented systems and evaluated each participant's performance. At the end of the event special awards have been handed over to the best-performers in the following categories:

  • "3D Mapping"
    3D mapping of the scenario's interieur — winner was team Flyby.
  • "Radiation Mapping"
    Mapping of the radiation distribution within the scenario, identification of radiation sources — winner was team Husarion.
  • "Manipulation"
    Identification of contaminated pipes and closing of the corresponding valves — winner was team FZI-RET.
  • "Search & Rescue"
    Finding missing workers and moving them out of the hazardous area — winner was team TAUT Dynamics.
  • "UxV Cooperation"
    Successful cooperation between UGV(s) and UAV(s) to measure and map the whole scenario — winner was team ELP & Roboverse.
  • "OPI Detection"
    Find and document special objects of potential interest — winner was team Telerob.

  • Special Award for Advances in 3D Mapping
    For outstanding results in 3D data aggregation the judge team decided to hand this award over to team MSAS!
  • Best Young Scientists Award
    The judge team decided to hand this special award over to team CJT-Robotics!

Idea

European Robotics aims to bridge the gap between HAZOPER (Hazardous Materials Incident Response Operations) users, industry and research in the field of ground robotics.

Nowadays industry plays the "leading" role in robotics in the sense that it often defines the robotic capabilities available. Many times this results in more or less standard robots being introduced into the HAZOPER without very thoroughly defined functional requirements.

This might be an appropriate approach for those cases where the users have no vision themselves on how to use robotic support in HAZOPER. But many users do have a view of their own on their desired use of robotics. These views are often characterised by short-term objectives and a limited understanding of technical issues.

Research instead has usually no short-term objective and often fails to provide practical applications. Ignoring scientific results, however, prevents interesting and innovative developments. Industry, especially medium-sized enterprises, should use research to fertilise their strategic development process.

So, many times there is a gap between the industry's understanding of robots needed, the appliance of research results and the HAZOPER users' understanding of robot technology as well as the technical feasibility of their requirements.

European Robotics aims to solve this situation by bringing together users, industry and researchers.

European Robotics is a co-operation between representatives from the users community, industry and the research community.

  • Users
    These are (future) professional users of ground robots that are designed for HAZOPER. These tasks are generally outdoor tasks in unstructured or urban terrain with specific threats and accuracy requirements.
  • Industry
    These are designers and manufacturers of integrated ground robots focusing on HAZOPER.
  • Research
    These are universities and other research institutes focusing on partial solutions relevant for HAZOPER, like sensor technology or outdoor navigation algorithms.

European Robotics is a non-profit organisation! All its activities are carried out on a purely honorary and complimentary basis.

5 Betroffenenrechte

Sie haben das Recht:

  • gemäß Art. 7 Abs. 3 DSGVO Ihre einmal erteilte Einwilligung jederzeit gegenüber uns zu widerrufen. Dies hat zur Folge, dass wir die Datenverarbeitung, die auf dieser Einwilligung beruhte, für die Zukunft nicht mehr fortführen dürfen;
  • gemäß Art. 15 DSGVO Auskunft über Ihre von uns verarbeiteten personenbezogenen Daten zu verlangen.
